MSNBC Host Says Trump Poses ‘Threat’ To ‘Democracy,’ Defends Harris’s Lack Of Policy Clarity

MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle defended Vice President Kamala Harris for not providing detailed answers to policy questions on Friday night, arguing that former President Donald Trump poses a “threat” to democracy.

Ms. Harris has avoided detailed policy answers in several interviews since President Joe Biden announced he was not seeking reelection. When New York Times columnist Bret Stephens suggested Ms. Harris should be asked about foreign policy during an episode of HBO's “Real Time with Bill Maher,” Mr. Ruhle scoffed. “I'm an undecided voter,” Stevens said. “I definitely wouldn't vote for Trump, but I'm not sure I want to vote for Kamala. I'm worried that she might not be very clear about what she wants to do as president.” Stevens added that Harris would be able to answer questions about foreign policy, such as whether she would support a Palestinian state run by Hamas, citing then-Republican presidential nominee George W. Bush's lack of knowledge of world leaders during the 2000 campaign.

“So if you don't like her answers, would you vote for Donald Trump?” Ruhle asked. “Kamala Harris isn't running for perfection, she's running against Trump. We have two options, and we may not know what her answers are. And in 2024, unlike 2016 for many Americans, we know exactly what Trump will do, who he is, and what a threat he is to democracy.”

Harris has reportedly backed away from some of the left-wing positions she took during her 2020 Democratic presidential campaign, primarily through comments made to reporters by campaign associates. Her campaign website recently added an “Issues” section that appears to have been copied and pasted from Biden's reelection campaign website.

“The problem a lot of people have with Kamala is they don't know what her answer is to anything,” Stevens responded, to which Ruhle retorted, “But we know what Kamala's answer is to everything.”

“So I certainly won't be voting for him, and neither should anyone,” Stevens countered, “but people also deserve to know to some extent what the policies of the person they're voting for are. I don't think it's too much to ask for her to give a real interview, not a promotional piece.” (Related article: Joy Reid claims 'violence' from MAGA after Trump was nearly assassinated twice)

Harris appeared at a forum with media mogul Oprah Winfrey on Thursday and gave a rambling response on several issues.
