Navajo County health officials warn of foxes, dog testing positive for rabies

SHOLOW, Ariz. — The Navajo County Public Health Services District is warning the community about an animal that recently tested positive for rabies.

Officials announced last week that a wild fox was found infected with rabies in the Show Low and Pinetop/Lakeside areas. In addition, Winslow's dog also tested positive for rabies.

Health officials said the fox reportedly displayed “aggressive behavior toward the public.”

County animal control officials continue to investigate and search for additional possible infections.

“Rabies is a preventable viral disease that is most commonly transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal,” the Navajo County Health Department said in a press release. “Most rabies cases reported each year occur in wild animals such as bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes, but any mammal can contract rabies.”
