NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd said he was told by senior officials in 2022 that President Joe Biden “cannot be re-elected in this condition.”
Some members of the media and the Democratic Party are considering whether to throw Biden out of the presidential race. ticket Following his infamous performance in the June 27 debate, a growing number of Democrats are calling for Biden to withdraw from the race and field another candidate they believe is better suited to defeat former President Donald Trump.
“But we had a cabinet member two years ago who, out of the blue, asked me, 'If this is going on, do you think he's not going to get re-elected?' And I said, 'Well, you have more interaction with him,' and he said, 'I don't have much interaction with him.' This was a fairly senior cabinet member and this was two years ago. This is, you know, the classic open secret of non-interaction, you know? Everybody knows it,” Todd said on his show, “The Chuck Toddcast.”

Biden has pledged to remain in the race in 2024, even as a growing number of allies question whether he can serve another four years. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a consistent and strong defender of Biden, left open the question of whether the president should remain in the race. “It's up to the president to decide if he wants to run,” Pelosi responded. “Time is running out and we're all urging the president to make a decision. The overwhelming support of the caucus is not for me to say. I'm no longer head of the caucus, but the president is loved, he's respected and people want the president to make the decision, not me.”
Representative Lloyd Doggett of Texas became the first Democrat to oppose Biden's candidacy in a statement on July 2. Representatives Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, Jerry Nadler of New York, and Adam Smith of Washington have also urged Biden to step down.
Hollywood actor George Clooney called on Democrats to replace Biden in a New York Times op-ed three weeks after hosting a fundraiser for the president.
A series of polls have shown that Trump's approval rating has nearly doubled since the debate, and one New York Times/Siena College/Wall Street Journal poll showed his national lead rising from 1.5 to 3.2.
