Neil Cavuto Halts Harris Spokesman After Claiming Trump Dodges ‘Tough Questions’ From ‘Mainstream Reporters’

Fox News host Neil Cavuto on Friday shut down Harris-Waltz senior press secretary Ian Sams after Sams claimed former President Donald Trump was avoiding “tough questions” from “mainstream reporters.”

Before Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to CNN's Dana Bash in late August, Republicans had criticized her for shying away from the press and not addressing issues related to the campaign. On “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” Cavuto grilled Sams about Harris' “continued shyness” of shying away from the press, despite the praise she received for her performance in Tuesday's first debate.

“That's an interesting question. Like you said, she just did a media interview about an hour ago. She spoke with one of the top anchors at the top station in Philadelphia. Obviously Pennsylvania is a key battleground state that was decided by just 80,000 votes four years ago. The vice president will continue to speak to reporters, engage with the media and give interviews. That's part of this campaign,” Sams said.

“I think now that the first debate is over, people are going to be watching TV to really see what the candidates are going to do, and I think she's going to continue to engage with the media,” Sams continued. “I know President Trump, for example, loves to do primetime appearances on this network and his Twitter exchanges with Elon Musk, but it's going to be interesting because we don't often see him sitting down being questioned by mainstream reporters like yourself.”

Cavuto weighed in, noting that Trump held a press conference in California on Friday, adding that the former president has spoken to reporters “a lot more” than Harris. (Related: Victor Davis Hanson suggests Harris' second debate bid is proof she's shaken by “internal polling”)

“He had a press conference today, which means he welcomes and responds to press coverage, and he's open to these impromptu exchanges. A lot of people might criticize the way he does it, but he does it more than your candidate,” Cavuto said.

“Yes, she was standing there about 20 minutes ago answering questions from reporters who were in the room. Again, this is part of the campaign and she will continue to engage with the media and the press,” Sams responded. “President Trump will probably be at the podium ranting for 45 minutes and reporters will be wondering what he's talking about, but we will continue to engage with the media and share her vision for the country, why she's running and what her priorities will be as president.”

Since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee, Vice President Harris has been criticized for reversing some of the left-wing policies she supported during the 2020 campaign. In an interview with CNN, she said her “values haven't changed,” without providing specifics on why she no longer supports policies such as the ban on fracking.
