New Maricopa County sheriff enters department under federal oversight

Phoenix (AZ Family) — In the Maricopa County sheriff race, Jerry Sheridan, a longtime former deputy sheriff and second in command under Sheriff Joe Arpaio, faces off against former Phoenix police detective Tyler Kampf.

A race has not yet been called, but Mr. Kump has conceded and Mr. Sheridan appears to be inheriting a department that will remain under federal oversight.

The story dates back nearly 20 years, when Arpaio’s Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office was found to be racially profiling Latino drivers.

This led to a federal lawsuit that ultimately required court oversight and reform. The total cost to taxpayers is $280 million.

Sheridan was by Arpaio’s side for much of the incident.

“Some of those reforms were necessary, there’s no question about that,” Sheridan said.

Mr. Sheridan went a step further and argued that the judges who held him in contempt when he was chief deputy would welcome him back.

“I’m sure he’ll be happy because he won’t have to retrain me. I already know what’s going on. I already have a plan to deal with continuing the court order,” Sheridan said. explained.

Kampf, a former Phoenix police detective, acknowledged that posed a challenge during the debate.

“It’s about rebuilding relationships, and that takes effort and time,” Kampf said.

It will likely take some time for them to pick up the pace of reform.

“I think it’s theoretically possible. But I think a capable leader will come along and quickly access what’s been done and what needs to be done,” said MCSO and others. said Emily Gunston, a former Justice Department attorney who worked with law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance.

A new Trump administration means a new U.S. attorney general and perhaps a change in focus. What impact could it have on the case?

“The Department of Justice may request changes to the court order. There is a good chance that the court will question these requested changes,” Gunston said.
