New video shows fight before shooting involving deputy northeast of Flagstaff

Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) – The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office has released an edited body camera video showing a confrontation between a Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputy and a suspected robbery that resulted in a shooting near Flagstaff early Thursday morning. According to the CCSO, Sgt. Jess Payne did donnie park Regarding reports that a man held a suspected robbery at gunpoint around 3:15 a.m. The suspect (later identified as 32-year-old Eric Adamson) had just broken in before Payne arrived on the scene. CCSO said he escaped by jumping out of a window.

Payne and other deputies arrived and searched the area. He spotted Adamson just before 3:30 a.m. and said, “Turn around and turn away from me!” Payne yelled at Adamson in the video. Investigators said Payne pulled out a gun because he wasn’t sure Adamson was armed. Adamson obeyed the order at first, crossing his fingers, placing his hands on his head and kneeling. However, when Payne pulled out his handcuffs and approached Adamson, he stood up and attacked Payne. “Stay back!” Paine yelled. “Fight! Fight!” Adamson reportedly put Payne in a chokehold and grabbed his gun. CCSOs Body camera footage slowed down, and gunshots were heard with both Payne and Adamson appearing to be holding guns.

Video resumes at normal speedheard screams. A second gunshot is heard. “Get back! Get back!” Payne yells. “Fired! Drop the suspect!” “The tourniquet is tight,” said the lieutenant. “It’s going to hurt, but I need to put a tourniquet on it to stop the bleeding,” Payne tells Adamson. However, due to Payne’s camera position and the darkness outside, viewers cannot see what the congressman is doing in the final part of the video.

Adamson was taken to Flagstaff Medical Center in a stable condition. If he is released, he faces several felony charges in the Coconino County Jail. Payne suffered minor injuries, but did not need to go to the hospital. He is on administrative leave, which is standard practice. A shooting investigation team involving officials from multiple agencies in northern Arizona will investigate the shooting. It was the 14th law enforcement-involved shooting outside the Valley and the 53rd in the state so far this year.
