“We are here, we are queer, we are picking up your children,” activists shouted as they marched. Marchers assembled at Tompkins Square Park, passed through the East Village and stopped at the Stonewall Inn. The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, was the scene of a police raid in 1969 that sparked the violent protests known as the Stonewall Riots. Amid growing concerns over overt drag events marketed and directed to children, some states have taken steps to ban minors from attending such shows. In May, Montana became the first state to ban drag shows in public and in front of children.
“Fortunately, we have a governor here in Montana who recognizes that drag performers should not be allowed to read or groom their children in publicly funded venues or facilities.” Rep. Mitchell Braxton, the Republican proponent of the bill, said.
Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill in May punishing companies for hosting drag shows with children. The Children’s Protection Act empowers the government to fine, suspend operations, or revoke licenses from violating businesses.
The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) Complaint Regarding reports that children were spotted at an overt Christmas-themed drag show in Orlando in December. The Florida governor’s administration is moving toward revoking the venue’s liquor license due to alleged violations.
