News Flash • County Partners Share Safety Tips for Memorial

With Memorial Day Weekend just around the corner, Maricopa County is reminding residents to keep safety first when enjoying outdoor activities like swimming, boating, hiking, etc. Today at Lake Pleasant Regional Park, Maricopa County Deputy Chairman Thomas Galvin, along with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department and the Arizona Department of Game and Fish shared important safety information with residents and visitors.

“For those planning to visit our beautiful county parks and lakes over Memorial Day weekend, please enjoy them responsibly and safely,” said Vice Chairman Galvin, who represents District 2. “Even experienced boaters, swimmers and hikers can fall victim to boating accidents on our lakes or heat stroke on our trails. These accidents can be prevented if we work together and put safety first.”

In 2023, approximately 1.2 million people visited Lake Pleasant Regional Park, making it the most visited park in the county. Memorial Day Weekend marks the peak visitation season, with cars lined for miles along Carefree Highway waiting for a chance to enjoy the lake. While most visitors to county parks are safety conscious, there were nine drownings in Maricopa County last year alone. The Sheriff's Office was also called upon to assist with 149 search and rescue missions, an increase of 44 from the previous year.

Maricopa County officials held a press conference on May 16, 2024, encouraging residents to stay safe on the lake and on the trails. This video shows some highlights from the event.

“Maricopa County's lakes and rivers are some of the most used areas in the country for personal watercraft recreation, and accidents on the water can happen when you least expect it,” said Sheriff Russ Skinner. “To ensure a safe outing, never swim alone, wear a personal flotation device, avoid or limit alcohol intake, stay hydrated and never leave children alone near the water. If you're new to operating a personal watercraft, we strongly encourage you to take a driver safety course before getting on the water. Lake Patrol deputies and volunteers are trained to respond quickly to rescue calls, but by being proactive and taking these steps you can prevent tragic situations and better protect yourself and your loved ones.”

“As temperatures continue to rise, so will the number of heatstroke cases on the trail. Severe heatstroke cases occur every summer as people enjoy outdoor recreation. Know your limits and have a plan. in front “People need to be cautious when they go out on the trails to stay safe,” added Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Director RJ Cardin.
