News Flash • Maricopa County to Provide $2 Million in Afford

At its first formal meeting of 2024 on Jan. 10, the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an agreement allocating $2 million for a new affordable housing development for seniors in Goodyear.

Jack Sellers, newly appointed chairman of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors representing District 1, celebrated the decision. “Rising housing costs are disproportionately impacting seniors living in Maricopa County, which has the fastest growing population experiencing homelessness. We are proud to be able to provide additional stability and security to those hardest hit by the crisis.”

Located just south of the southeast corner of Loop 303 and Van Buren Street, the Suncrest Vista community offers 261 affordable rental apartments for seniors. The community includes 76 one-bedroom apartments, 153 two-bedroom apartments, and 32 three-bedroom apartments with a variety of in-room amenities and easy access to retail, grocery stores, and other nearby services. “We are grateful for our partnership with Maricopa County to ensure Goodyear has a wide range of housing options to meet the needs of our residents,” said Goodyear Mayor Joe Pizzillo. “Finding creative ways to work together for the betterment of our communities makes us stronger as a region and as a state.”

Maricopa County's donation will fund the construction of 10 units set aside for households at or below 50% of the area median income. If there are two seniors in the household, the income limit would be $37,400 for her. The funds are part of the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) budget allocated to Maricopa County and will be used to pay for the hard costs of construction.

This partnership highlights the county's continued commitment to providing affordable housing in 2024. County housing contributions for 2023 include:

  • Serving 41,024 people experiencing homelessness
  • $130 million in ARPA funding for affordable housing opportunities
  • 35 affordable housing projects funded, expected to add nearly 4,000 units when completed
  • 812 of the 4,000 units have been completed, with a further 815 expected to be completed in 2024.
