Newsom shares additional information about his strategy for the redistricting conflict with Trump

Sacramento –

Governor Gavin Newsom mentioned on Thursday that he is contemplating a special election on November 4th. This election would ask Californians to approve a new congressional map as a way to counteract the influence of Republican-led states and to thwart President Trump’s intentions to gain power in the House during the mid-term elections.

“There seems to be a growing awareness in the country that if given a fair chance, Americans will choose differently next November. We’re taking Congress back,” he stated. “The president understands this, which is why he’s attempting to manipulate the rules.”

In response to Trump’s urging to Texas and other states to redraw their congressional maps to secure additional seats by 2026, Newsom referred to this effort as “Jerrymander California.”

“We’re going to respond transparently and honestly, but we will respond,” Newsom asserted. “I am no longer in a vulnerable or defenseless position.”

Under his proposal, the California Legislature needs to approve sending a voter’s action to the public.

Voters will be presented with the new council district map, and there will be a special election on the first Tuesday of November. In this election, voters will decide whether to adopt the map, which would be effective until 2030, when California would revert to its current independent constituency system.

Following the next census, a new map will be created by California’s independent constituency committee in 2032.

The governor noted that he is still in the early stages of planning and hasn’t yet determined the costs associated with the special elections statewide. He emphasized that the expense of maintaining democracy is “priceless.”

“Since many local elections are already scheduled for the first Tuesday, we might require significantly fewer resources than for special elections that aren’t part of the regular electoral cycle,” he added. “This could really help in cutting down costs.”

Newsom promised to provide more details in the upcoming weeks.
