Former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich detailed Wednesday why he thinks former President Donald Trump can flip New York, a traditional Democratic stronghold, to a Republican victory in the next election.
Host of “The Ingram Angle” Laura Ingraham Gingrich was responding to Trump's rally on Long Island on Wednesday, saying Trump is a candidate who cares about his home state and sees an important opportunity for change amid widespread dissatisfaction with the state's Democratic leadership.
“First of all, I think he believes he has a real chance to win New York because of corruption and because of a lack of campaigning.[sic] “Because of liberal policies, because of millions of illegal immigrants and the crime that comes with it,” Gingrich told Ingraham.
“And then, of course, there's a big scandal going on in New York City that's affecting the mayor, and this couldn't come at a worse time for Democrats, so I think that's part of it.”

Gingrich also likened Trump to former President Ronald Reagan, who discussed his providential role with Pope John Paul II after surviving an assassination attempt.
“They both got shot, they both survived, they both talked about what God intended for them, and my guess is that President Trump now has a deeper sense of mission, a deeper sense of having to do the right thing for America, because in the Butler shooting, he came within half an inch of dying and it's God's providence that he's still here,” the former House Speaker added.
“He loves the state. He loves New York. He's spent most of his life there. I think he has a very deep affection for New York and for the state as a whole,” Gingrich explained, “and I think he also feels that this is a sacred moment in the sense that Biden and Harris have wreaked such havoc that they can really turn this country around.”
Gingrich added that Trump sees a unique opportunity for major political change in the traditionally Democratic state.
“There's an opportunity here to make incredible change, and I think Mr. Trump can make it happen,” Gingrich continued. (Related article: 'President appeasement' Gingrich criticizes Biden's foreign policy choices, claims he refuses to 'acknowledge reality')
With 48 days to go until the election, President Trump returned to his home state of New York to rally supporters on Long Island. News Nation New York is known as a Democratic stronghold, but President Trump has repeatedly suggested that both New York and neighboring New Jersey could be advantageous in the 2024 election, the outlet reported.
A July poll showed Trump trailing President Joe Biden closely in the state, garnering 40% support to Biden's 47.5% during the campaign. According to Reagan was the last Republican presidential candidate to win the Empire State, winning the 1980 and 1984 elections.
