MSNBC host Mika Brzezinski said he “cannot interpret” President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump's performance during Thursday night's debate, saying he felt “something was off” with Biden's entrance.
During the 90-minute debate, moderated by CNN hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, Biden appeared to freeze at times, made multiple gaffes, spoke often incomprehensibly and lost his train of thought multiple times. Brzezinski offered her thoughts on Biden's performance following a solemn opening monologue by her husband, “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough. “Re-watching what happened last night, to me it was horrible,” Brzezinski said. “It was horrible. There's no excuse for it. I still wonder how he's doing in a week. Was he sick?”
“When he came out on stage, I thought something was wrong,” she added. Biden appeared stiff.
Brzezinski later defended Biden, despite his own observation that “something was wrong.”
“Despite last night's performance, I still believe he's the best choice for this country,” Brzezinski said. “Because he stood next to a man who represents fascism, who doesn't believe in this country, who would never agree with the results of an election even if it were free and fair to him. A man who incited a riot. A man who tried to overturn the results of an election. A man who is guilty of sexual abuse. A man who is a con man. A man who is a convicted felon.”
Biden's performance in the debate was panned as a disaster by major media outlets such as CNN and MSNBC, as well as Democrats, but Brzezinski insisted Biden could bounce back from it.
“My instinct is that he's not ready to give up just yet. Joe Biden has lost more than he's won in his life on every front, especially politically,” Brzezinski said. “This man keeps losing, and he only wins when it matters. The evidence is there. He's lost personally. He's lost on everything, he's hit rock bottom, but each time he fights his way back.”
