Officials Suspend Turkey’s Merih Demiral For Celebrating With Hand Sign Linked To Gray Wolves Ultranationalist Group

Ah, people are stupid.

Meri DemiralThe Turkish men's soccer team defender was suspended by UEFA for two matches at Euro 2024 after celebrating a goal with a hand sign linked to the far-right group Grey Wolves. The incident occurred during Turkey's round of 16 win over Austria on Tuesday.

UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that they had appointed an inspector to launch an investigation into Demiral, and on Friday they issued a statement saying that he had been suspended for “not adhering to the general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of polite behaviour, using a sporting event for the expression of an unsporting nature and bringing the sport of football into disrepute.” ESPN. This is a big loss for Turkey, as Demiral scored all of the goals in a 2-1 win that saw them advance to the quarter-finals, which they face on Saturday against the Netherlands, for which Demiral is understandably suspended.

If Turkey beats the Netherlands, Demiral will also miss the semi-finals against Switzerland or England. (Spoiler alert: Turkey won't win.)

After scoring his second goal against Austria, Demiral made a hand sign that is closely associated with the Turkish ultranationalist group Uluk Ocaklari, also known as the “Grey Wolves.”

Wait… was he suspended for doing the NWO/The Kliq “Too Sweet” symbol? *LOL*

This takes the whole situation from serious to extremely funny. Comedy indeed!
