Power outages are currently causing water supply issues in Santa Cruz County.
Around 4 a.m. Wednesday, a conductor failure disabled power lines connecting Santa Cruz County to the regional energy grid, utility service providers UniSource and Liberty Utilities said.
At the peak of the blackout, 20,000 residents were affected. As of Wednesday afternoon, about 17,000 people are still affected. The outage occurred in an area with limited access to heavy equipment needed for repairs, delaying recovery efforts.
Unisource said Its employees are working to restore power, and Liberty Utilities has asked its customers to conserve water as much as possible in the meantime.
The Nogales City office was closed until power was restored, but police and fire departments remained open, the Nogales Police Department said. Tweet.
UniSource sought to restore service using power from local generators in Nogales and a low-voltage link to Tucson Electric Power’s semi-transmission system in southern Pima County.
Those living far from these resources will remain without service until the power lines are repaired, UniSource said.
