Pima County approves nearly $7 million for affordable housing projects | News

TUCSON (KVOA) — The median sales price for single-family homes in the city is over $300,000, according to the Tucson Association of Realtors.

On Tuesday, the Pima County Board of Supervisors voted 4-1 to award $6.875 million to eight projects to develop 835 units of affordable housing across the county.

Felicity Hover and her 22-month-old daughter Willow have just moved into a new apartment on 29th Street between Swan Road. and Craycroft Road. Moving day was last Friday. Before that, Felicity and Willow were homeless and in a shelter for six weeks.

Almost two years ago, they were on the street for four months.

It's not a big place, but to Felicity, it's everything.

“Stability, the ability to always be together and not have to be afraid of being separated,” she said. “It means I don't have to eat chicken nuggets in the microwave anymore. It means I actually cook them at home. I'm disabled, so that was really difficult. They helped us with the TEP bill and deposit, which really saved us.”

To qualify for Pima County's affordable housing program, an individual or family must currently earn less than 80% of the median income of approximately $64,000.

“This will reduce homelessness and increase housing safety and housing stability for everyone in this community for years to come, for 30 years,” said Andy Flagg, deputy director of the Pima County Department of Community Workforce and Development. I hope that means something.”

Thirty years seems unimaginable to Felicity and Willow, who are still unpacking and playing together on the living room floor. They are finally starting to feel hope and optimism.

“Willow basically gets her own apartment,” Felicity said. “I'm just here to take care of her so I can have her daughter, who is my whole world, and keep her safe. That's what she means to me. All that really matters in life.”
