Pima County Board of Supervisors first 2024 meeting includes new member, border breakdown

The Pima County Board of Supervisors held its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, touching on upcoming efforts along the county line.

This was the first meeting to include the board's newly appointed District 3 representative, Sylvia Lee, who took over leadership of the border district late last year.

The Border Patrol's Tucson Sector saw a record number of asylum seekers and migrants late last month, according to a report prepared for the board.

Aid workers in Tucson were seeing about 1,300 people a day at the Casa Alitas Welcome Center. The center serves as a temporary shelter for immigrants who are released while awaiting immigration hearings in the United States, where they receive medical exams and other assistance.

In other Arizona cities, including Nogales, asylum seekers were also released without assistance from aid groups.

So far, no one has been turned away in Tucson, but the report warns that that could change without additional federal funding.
