Pima County deputies shoot man with sword

Tucson, Arizona (KOLD 13 News) — The Pima County Sheriff's Department announced that a man was killed in a deputy-involved shooting late Saturday night, February 24th.

Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious man yelling and brandishing a sword outside a hotel room near 4855 South Palo Verde Avenue, near Irvington and Interstate 10, around 10 p.m.

When deputies arrived and attempted to speak to him, PCSD said he unsheathed his sword and approached the deputies. That's when his deputy fired his gun, striking the man.

Deputies began rendering aid until local Metro Fire Departments arrived. Despite efforts, the man was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

The Pima County Regional Incident Team has taken over the criminal investigation of the incident, while the Tucson Police Department is investigating the deputy-involved shooting. The Pima County Sheriff's Office will conduct a separate investigation to determine if any policy violations occurred.

Once the investigation is complete, all findings will be forwarded to the Pima County Prosecutor's Office for review.

This is the 16th law enforcement-involved shooting so far this year and the fifth outside of Maricopa County.
