Pima County deputy injured in officer-involved south Tucson shooting

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office reported that they exchanged gunfire on Sunday in pursuit of a hit-and-run investigation.

Pima County lawmakers responded to a hit-and-run collision on Valencia Road and Camino Verde around 8:40 p.m. Sunday and an investigation led to Block 6400 on West Swan Falls Way.

A shootout took place between the sheriff’s deputy and the suspect, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office. One lieutenant suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was taken to a nearby hospital. The suspect was also transported in critical condition.

Details of the firing, including how many were fired and the circumstances, were not available.

The Pima Area Major Incidents Team will take over the investigation, while the Tucson Police Department will lead the investigation. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department said it would conduct a separate parallel investigation to determine if there were any policy violations.
