TUCSON, Arizona (KGUN) — From roadblocks to rapid water relief, residents of Pima County know the inconveniences of the monsoon.
This problem usually surrounds areas with washing places, such as the Finger Rock Wash in the foothills of Catalina Mountains.
A finger rock wash improvement project is underway to aid in flood drainage. Led by the Pima County Regional Flood Control Division, this project is just one of the ways the county maintains the washing area.
“The transportation project will replace the old single culvert and raise the road to its elevation to allow the 100-year-old floodplain to pass under it,” said Joseph Kufari.
Before the project began, the area acted as a dam, endangering homes downstream. This project he plans to complete by June 2023.
As for other flood mitigation projects, the county is considering flood walls as a possible solution.
“So if you actually raise the elevation of some levees, you’re putting in wash waters that contain it,” Kfali said.
“Washing water changes, right? Sediment is an invasion of vegetation, all of which reduces its ability. So how do you counteract that? Well, remove that vegetation and sediment, or as much as you can.” Either we raise the embankment of the wash channel, and that’s what we’re going for.” We chose to work on some of those areas,” Kfali said.
