The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has investigated a police shooting that left a man threatening suicide Saturday night.
Officers were dispatched to a large apartment complex on South Prudence Road and East 22nd Street following reports of a man threatening suicide just before midnight Saturday, according to a statement from the Tucson Police Department. .
Officers were told the 27-year-old man was armed with a knife and at least one firearm, according to a statement.
A mental health professional called the man in an attempt to provide services, the statement said.
Upon arrival, officers began searching the men when they heard gunshots.
The man was walking east to west through the complex toward Prudence Road, where additional officers were stationed, the statement said. As the suspect emerged from the complex, one officer fired a gun and hit the man.
Officers began offering assistance to the man and he was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The man’s identity is currently unknown.
“There are no additional updates at this time. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department will be the lead investigative agency as part of the Pima Regional Critical Incidents Team,” Marissa Hernandez, deputy spokeswoman for the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, told The Republic.
The Tucson Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards will also conduct a separate, but parallel, investigation to determine whether a policy violation occurred, the statement said.
No other information was made public.
