Officers responded to the death of a man and a toddler after two cars collided on Elliott Road and Coal Drive in Gilbert on Friday afternoon.

Gilbert Police later named one of the victims 22-year-old Cooper Lamb, son of Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb, and said the baby was Sheriff Lamb’s granddaughter.

The silver truck was traveling west at what appeared to be “normal speed” when it collided with a red vehicle traveling east, according to the Gilbert Police Department. The red car turned left and tried to go north on Cole Drive.

Officers and Gilbert Fire and Rescue first responders attempted to save the lives of three occupants of the red car, but Cooper Lamb and the infant were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. A female driver of a red car was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

In a Facebook post, the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office said Cooper Lamb’s fiancée and child’s mother were hospitalized and in critical condition.

The truck driver was not injured. After an investigation by the Gilbert Police Department Transportation Department, the truck driver was arrested for possible impairment, officials said.
