President Garimella emphasizes the U of A’s land-grant mission during visit to Yavapai County

University of Arizona’s Collaborative Engagement in Yavapai County

University of Arizona President Suresh Galimella, along with key leadership members, recently met with local government and community leaders in Yavapai County. The visit included tours of the university’s facilities and aimed to reinforce the importance of service throughout the state.

This trip underscored how crucial universities are in Arizona for student success and community engagement, which ultimately helps shape the future.

Arizona’s Purpose

After taking office in October 2024, Galimella prioritized a trip to Yuma, stating, “I thought it was important to see firsthand the agricultural innovations we’re supporting in Arizona and how we’re helping our community.”

The itinerary included stops at various locations, like V Bar V Ranch, Cracchiolo DK Ranch, and the Yavapai County Cooperative Extension, which emphasized a commitment to the land.

Garimella noted, “As the state’s land-grant institution, we aim to engage with Arizonans in their communities. Listening to feedback helps us create opportunities for students, boost economic growth, and strengthen partnerships that benefit everyone.”

Farms as “Living Research Institutes”

At V Bar V Ranch, interim director Brett Blum highlighted the ranch’s role in research, showcasing a herd of 125 cattle used for studies in livestock genetics and grazing management. The incorporation of virtual fencing techniques exemplifies how innovation can elevate efficiency while protecting natural resources.

“These ranches serve as living labs,” Blum mentioned. “The Experiment Station Network directly produces scientific research reflecting Arizona’s diverse environments and is beneficial to ranchers while also training future scientists and agricultural leaders.”

Cooperative Extension’s Century-Long Impact

Galimella’s visit also put a spotlight on the Cooperative Extension, which has provided community-oriented engagement and education for over a century. With an allocation of over $15 million in the 2026 budget, the program is significant for all counties in Arizona.

A 2022 economic analysis revealed that for every dollar invested in Cooperative Extension, there’s a return of $4.87.

“Cooperative Extension amplifies Arizona’s resources,” stated Yavapai County Extension Director Matt Halldorson. “It enhances lives through initiatives that help ranchers conserve water and improve academia, nutrition education, youth programs, and leadership training.”

Since 2022, Yavapai County Cooperative Extension has seen its registration triple, expanding its offerings in science, technology, and livestock education. Last year, volunteers contributed around 18,000 service hours, broadening the reach of their faculty and staff.

Connecting with Local Leaders

Conversations with county supervisors and Prescott City Council members centered on how university research and healthcare can align with local community needs. A shared sentiment emerged emphasizing the critical nature of university partnerships for local development.

“The University of Arizona has been a reliable ally in Yavapai County,” remarked Maury Thompson, the county manager. “We appreciate the President’s commitment to addressing local concerns with community leaders.”

Alumni and Community Ties

Alumni gatherings at Hasayankain drew a mix of alumni, donors, and community figures. Garimella shared details about the university’s strategic initiatives and personal experiences that reflect his commitment to the land’s traditions. While serving as president of the University of Vermont, he kept the desk of Senator Justin Morrill, who played a significant role in establishing land-grant universities.

“I have the opportunity to work within three prestigious land-grant institutions,” Galimella shared. “These experiences reinforce my belief in the transformative power of public universities to uplift our communities.”

“The Power for Good”

Throughout the visit, Galimella reiterated the university’s commitment to Yavapai County. Whether through ranches, educational settings, or community interactions, the university is dedicated to providing solutions for the Arizona community.

“Through our research, education, and services, we’re here to support our community’s evolving needs,” Galimella concluded. “The University of Arizona will continue to be influential in every county across the state.”
