The Special Research Vehicle will begin driving throughout Coconino County this week, gathering data on the condition of more than 300 miles of paved roads maintained by the county.
The work is being done by the Austin, Texas-based Road Asset Service (RAS), which allows the county’s Public Works Engineering Department to determine the overall condition of the pavement and prioritize future maintenance and capital improvement projects. Helps you rank.
Officials say the data collected will also be invaluable in determining the best treatments to cost-effectively extend the service life of paved county roads.
RAS vehicles use high-definition digital cameras and other precision equipment to collect images of all pavement and surface transportation-related assets within the county’s lot. To ensure the highest quality data and images, the vehicle only collects data during the day.

The project is expected to last about a month. However, it is subject to change due to weather and other unforeseen factors.
