‘Public Execution’: Jonathan Turley Calls Out New York For Using ‘Nuclear Option’ Against Trump

George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley on Wednesday asked a New York judge and attorney general for a huge fine against former President Donald Trump.

Judge Arthur Engoron on Friday ordered Trump to pay $354 million and spend three years in prison for New York-based companies and entities for inflating the value of real estate holdings to obtain loans. He was prohibited from becoming an officer or officer. In an interview on Fox & Friends, Mr. Turley claimed that Democratic Attorney General Letitia James and Mr. Engoron had resorted to drastic action against Mr. Trump. “[Trump] There are certainly good arguments for the overreach of this ruling,” Turley argued. “We'll have to figure out whether it's based on the Eighth Amendment or the Due Process Clause… What's interesting about this case is that James claims that this is not like punitive damages. That's disgorgement. We're just getting money back from him, ill-gotten gains.”

“But when you dig into this opinion, there's nothing there,” Turley added. “I can't really understand how he arrived at this number based on actual, concrete numbers. He basically exaggerates everything he calculates, but , and then makes a lot of assumptions. He says things like, “If I had been honest with the bank, the bank would have asked for a higher interest rate and I wouldn't have gotten such a good deal.” Well, the Trump Corporation was famous for squeezing banks because they wanted his business. And they said this on the dais in front of this judge. They said, “We made money.” We wanted more lending to this, what they called, whale customers. ”

James sued Trump in September 2022. promised This was to investigate the former president's finances during his 2018 campaign for attorney general.

“The court's argument is that even if it didn't cost anyone a dollar, it's still a scam…Even if we accept that this is a scam, the question is why choose this nuclear option? This was in effect a public execution, and the glee with which people expressed that he might sell off his property reflects the dissatisfaction many of us have with this opinion. It actually shows pleasure. ”
