A CNN panel warned Thursday that President Joe Biden's path to defeating former President Donald Trump in the next presidential election is narrowing.
The Cook Political Report on Tuesday changed its projections for Arizona, Georgia and Nevada from “swing” states to “Republican Advantage,” and for New Hampshire, Minnesota and Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District from “Democrat Advantage” to “Democrat Advantage.” Jake Tapper and CNN political director David Chalian said on “The Lead with Jake Tapper” that Biden's plans to win the election in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District may be in jeopardy following his disastrous performance in the debate. “They acknowledge that their polling has taken a hit, but they still see a path to 270 votes, and that path goes through Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, which they say is the best path,” Tapper said. “I would point out that that's their only path. Nevada and Georgia were all but certain to disappear before the debate, as was Arizona.”
“There's still time, but they're certainly already moving away from Joe Biden. And frankly, Jake, you know, if you talked to Biden officials before the debate, they would say the path to 270 states was through Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District,” Chalian said. “And the reason they wanted this early debate is because they wanted to wake up the public to this race and this contrast. The public woke up to this fight, but I don't think it woke up in the way the Biden campaign wanted. But I should point out that since the debate, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin have gotten harder, not easier. They see that as the only viable path, but that means that the viable path has become less likely.”
Tapper said his campaign believes winning those states is the “best path” and, at this point, “the only path.”
CNN senior data reporter Harry Enten said Thursday he believes Trump can compete with Biden in the battleground states needed to win the Electoral College, as well as in states that are sure to be Democratic wins.
“I wouldn't be surprised if the post-debate polls show Joe Biden actually trailing in Virginia,” Enten said. “Who would have thought we'd see that? But when you look at states like New York, Virginia, Minnesota, New Hampshire, states that Joe Biden won comfortably last time, it's true. Now, all of a sudden, the Donald Trump campaign thinks they can win the race. And based on the pre-debate data, I absolutely believe they can.”
