Republicans on the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee released the framework for a new GOP-backed farm bill.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a member of the committee, praised the new framework Wednesday, saying the revised farm bill is critical for both Alabama and American producers.
“Every time I visit Alabama, I hear stories of farmers struggling to survive in Joe Biden's economy,” said Tuberville. “What they need is a farm bill that helps them shoulder the enormous burden of feeding, fueling and clothing our country, not a long list of burdensome climate regulations. Unlike the $1.5 trillion bounty from Senate Democrats, the Republican farm bill framework actually puts farmers first. Our framework will raise benchmark prices, expand access to capital and increase market opportunities.”
“I am pleased that the Farm Bill passed the House Judiciary Committee with bipartisan support, and I hope this will spur action in the Senate Judiciary Committee.”

The Senate Republican framework includes several of Tuberville’s agriculture priorities for Alabama foresters, farmers and producers.
That includes efforts to modernize our water system, and I plan to introduce a bipartisan amendment in October 2023 to increase funding for clean water and sewer systems in low-income rural communities.
The senator has also focused on combating foreign influence in U.S. agriculture. He has introduced bills such as the Foreign Adversary Risk Management Act and the Protecting American Farmland from Foreign Harm Act, which are reflected in the House farm bill and the Senate Republican framework.
To help Alabama's pecan and tree nut farmers, Tuberville's Farmers Market Extension Act would include these products in the USDA's Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program, benefiting low-income seniors and expanding market opportunities for farmers, his office is promoting.
The feral hog eradication bill introduced by Rep. Tuberville seeks to make permanent a pilot program to control feral hog populations, which cause devastating damage to agriculture. The House farm bill and Senate Republican framework allocate $150 million from 2025 to 2029 for this purpose.

Tuberville’s efforts also include closing crop insurance coverage gaps for winter oil crops and expanding crop protection by raising base prices for key agricultural programs. These proposals are included in the House farm bill and the Senate Republican framework.
To improve farmers' access to capital, Mr. Tuberville has pushed to increase loan limits on farm operating and farm ownership loans to address the financial challenges facing many farmers. The House farm bill includes language to increase those limits.
Taborville also stressed that expanding broadband access in rural areas must be a priority, emphasizing this need during a Subcommittee hearing on Rural Broadband Connectivity.
The Senate Republican bill is based on the House Republican farm bill, which recently passed the House Agriculture Committee on a 33-21 vote.
