The Republican Party of Alabama today announced the start of the qualifying period for the special election primary in House District 27. This marks the beginning of a race to fill a vacant seat in one of Alabama's key legislative districts.
Prospective candidates must submit their candidacy by Tuesday, January 30th at 5:00 PM CST. The deadline is critical for Republican candidates seeking to represent the district in the Alabama House of Representatives. The need for this special election arose after Wes Kitchens moved from the House of Representatives to Alabama's 9th Senate District. Mr. Kitchens won a narrow but decisive victory in the Republican primary for the Senate seat, leaving the House District 27 seat vacant. Kitchens' victory came in a race without a Democratic candidate.
Among the early candidates to announce their candidacy was Guntersville native Gina Ross. Ross, who is known for serving as the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education secretary under two governors, is one of the celebrities to step into the ring.
The district, which includes Arab, Guntersville, Union Grove, and Grant, has experienced a variety of political changes and notable campaigns throughout its history.
From a fiscal perspective, large amounts of money are invested in elections in this district. Over the past two decades, candidates vying for this seat have raised more than $1 million, highlighting the district's importance in Alabama's political landscape.
Gov. Kay Ivey has scheduled a special primary election for April 2nd. A runoff election, if required, is scheduled for April 30th. A final special general election is scheduled for July 16th.
