Rain and snow fall in Tucson area, higher elevations blocked for drivers | News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — Sunday brought busy weather for much of Tucson. Some Tucson residents changed their plans because of the instability.

On Sunday, Tucson and all of southern Arizona had cloudy skies.

Rain pounded the windshields for many Tucson residents who had planned to go out. Several car accidents were caught in the middle of the storm.

Some Southern Arizonans saw snow in midtown. White flakes can be seen in the parking lot at Alvernon Way and 22nd Street.

More snow has closed the road to Mount Lemmon as rain and wind make their presence felt.

A Pima County sheriff's deputy turns drivers like Mark Santorella around on Catalina Highway.

“We were going to go out there and run around in the snow,” said Santrella, who just moved to Tucson.

“I've only been here for about six months, so I've climbed it a few times. I went up there on Christmas and it was snowing so it was fun. I thought I'd do it again,” Santorella explained. did.

Brenda Estrella and her family made it farther than Santrella, but had to turn back.

“Cars started swerving. Some cars started sliding,” Estrella said.

Estrella said the Catalina Highway was so icy and snowy that even his pickup truck was covered in snow.

Her plans for Sunday were canceled due to sudden changes in the weather.

“When we were coming down there were three cars in front of us. The first one slipped and the third one tried to go around it, so one went back and forth. It was really dangerous. '' Estrella explained.

Eventually the rain stopped in Tucson and the sun shone on the snow-covered mountains.
