China expert and Hudson Institute analyst Michael Pillsbury said Friday on Fox News that President-elect Donald Trump’s comprehensive strategy for engagement with China will prompt significant concessions from China. He said it was possible.
Pillsbury while appearing on “The Ingraham Angle” said President Trump’s approach is reminiscent of a diplomatic style reminiscent of the Ronald Reagan era.
“President-elect Trump is laying out his China strategy for the next four years, and it’s great. It’s partly taken from ‘The Art Of The Deal,’ partly from President Trump’s Ronald Reagan “It comes from an admiration for Reagan’s negotiating style,” Pillsbury said. “We put a lot of pressure on our enemies, even threatened them, but we always left a way out, we were respectful, and in the end we were able to get an agreement and meet with President Reagan.”
Pillsbury said the balance between pressure and deference in negotiations is strategic, similar to President Reagan’s tactics.
“We know that he went from the evil empire and the ash box of history to the point where we say that was a long time ago. Now we are entering a new era and finally the Soviet Communist Party “We’re going to have a collapse,” Pillsbury said, referring to President Reagan’s earlier approach.
Pillsbury added that China’s actions are a sign of respect for the Trump administration and could lead to significant concessions from China. He said this potential detente could lead to breakthroughs in areas where China has traditionally resisted U.S. interests. “I think President Trump will make clear today how he will manage things. And frankly, all we can focus on right now is that Chinese Communist jet fighters and ships are very dangerous around Taiwan every day.” If that number is reduced in the short term, it would be a sign of respect for President Trump. “It’s going to be,” Pillsbury said. “I think we’ll be on the right track to get more concessions from China in all the other areas where China has long been against us.”
