President-elect Donald Trump on Thursday said he could help Los Angeles residents recover from the devastating fires that still kill thousands of people, while also helping Republicans score early wins on his agenda. I proposed an idea to do so.
Americans watched in horror as a Los Angeles neighborhood was completely destroyed by out-of-control fires that raged across California. Once the initial shock wore off, it became clear that the blame lay with the clearly incompetent state and local leadership made up entirely of Democrats.

Whether it’s a fire department focused on DEI, cuts to the fire department budget, a lack of a mayor, or reservoirs left dry, the people of Los Angeles are left without help or hope. It is not easy to overlook examples of such neglect. The inevitable happened. For the first time in a while, California voters are turning against Democrats. California leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of most conservative voters. It is a land where far-left ideology has been allowed to flourish, and their current situation symbolizes the consequences of their actions. Couple these feelings with the reality that the victims of Hurricane Helen are not yet whole. It’s easy to think that many people don’t want to bail them out. Rightly or wrongly, this is how many people not affected by the fires view the situation. But this bitter pill will become easier to swallow if the financial aid for California also means a first step toward the voter mandate handed down on Nov. 5. Still, it’s not just fed up conservatives that President Trump has to contend with. President Trump is well aware that Democrats are considering all means to delay the victory of his agenda. Republicans hold slim majorities in both chambers, so while they won’t necessarily need a Democratic vote to enact his policies, it would certainly make it easier. Having wish list items like aid California means Democrats can vote yes when Republican officials ultimately do what they always do (vote against our mission and let the American people down). This provides sufficient incentive to invest in The alternative would be for them to retreat to blue states and have to explain why they don’t want to help their citizens just to anger Trump.

And what President Trump wants is to bring these two positions to the negotiating table. In a conversation with Dan Bongino on Thursday, President Trump suggested that all federal fire aid to California should be conditioned on passing the president-elect’s agenda in one big reconciliation bill.
“I’d like you to look at one bill. Because of Los Angeles, you’d think it’s a Democratic thing. They want that money to move fast. Because of Los Angeles, it’s big and beautiful.” I think the concept of a bill helped a lot,” President Trump said.
“If you add Los Angeles to the mix, you have one really big, beautiful bill, because frankly, they really want it,” he added. “They really want the money to go out there, and I don’t think they should introduce a bill until it includes Los Angeles. If you include Los Angeles, you get everything you want. .”

The reconciliation bill would begin to address some of the biggest issues that drove voters to the polls in November, including border security, tax policy, and investment in energy and manufacturing. President Trump believes that by tagging these issues where Democrats are unlikely to get the support they “so desperately want,” he has an opportunity to score an early America First victory. Still, they will have no choice but to support the settlement. Democrats lost support across a wide swath of their base because of their handling of fire preparedness and management. It is politically unacceptable to give up aid to correct incompetent leaders.
This is Republicans’ best chance to show that only right-wing policies can save California voters from the hole they dug themselves. Help them rebuild, show them how President Trump’s policies work for everyone, and lead with confidence. There could be no better opportunity for them.
