Operation Stonegarden can help the agent work overtime and the border guards to look along the border for illegal activities.
The program has returned to the Tony Estrada administration in the Sheriff Office for many years.
News 4 Totson’s Chief Investigation Reporter Chorus Nurlander was the first reporter to learn about changes in direction from the sources of information.
When Nayander asked the sheriff Hathaway about it on Friday, he did not recognize it.
Hathaway stated that the decision was immediately valid and was raised in concern that his staff had been instructed by the federal government.
“Under the Operation Stone Garden, I have to put an agent under the authority of the federal supervisor. They must report to the supervisor of the Border Security Corps to receive the instructions.” He explained.
In a promised or already taken action along the new Donald Trump administration, he has reserved his staff under the federal government for the period of all periods.
“It seemed to be a time suitable for eliminating my officers from the domination of the federal government,” he said.
Hathaway did not acknowledge that the decision was based on a personal political views on the new administration, and he has been concerned about it for many years.
News 4 Touson talked to Travis Arnold, a former vice -chairman of the department opposed to Hathaway in the past election. He believes that this decision is clearly based on personal politics.
“It’s a pity that he incorporates his personal political views and inserts them into his position as the highest public security officer,” said Arnold.
He believes that withdrawing from Operation Stone Garden will hurt public safety and affect many agents who have rely on extra income from overtime.
He stated that new employees in the sheriffs have begun to earn less than $ 40,000 a year, believing that many people will be tempted to jump to other departments and careers.
“You can see the IN-N-OUT advertisement that makes a lot more there, rather than starting with the Santa Cruz County Sheriff Office,” said Arnold.
Hathaway said that the financial situation was a complicated problem. Many extra income has earned a larger pension without the federal support of the county taxpayers.
“It’s a two -way sword, taxpayers are responsible for increasing pensions, and the federal government does not complement us to increase pensions paid in the remaining life.” I said.
