The editor-in-chief of Scientific American resigned on Thursday after posting an inflammatory rant against supporters of President-elect Donald Trump.
After Trump’s victory on election night, Laura Hellmuth belittled the president-elect’s voters as “the meanest, stupidest, most bigoted high school classmates” and vowed to “smash them to the core.” ” he added. She also called Gen Helmut attempted to retract his comments in a Nov. 8 apology, insisting that he still “values civil communication and editorial objectivity.” However, on Thursday she announced her resignation. Under Hellmuth’s watch, Scientific American endorsed not only then-candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 election (an unprecedented move), but also Vice President Kamala Harris in this year’s election. Michael Shermer, a former columnist who wrote for the magazine from 2001 to 2019, said in early 2024 that he was more interested in furthering political discourse than uncovering the truth, and was gradually becoming a left-wing bastard. He even blamed his former employer for letting him down.

For people like Helmut, science is not about seeking truth, disproving commonly held theories, or offering bold speculations about new theories. It’s about serving leftist narratives, gatekeeping cults, and climbing dirty poles to the top.
Today is a day to celebrate, because Helmut’s resignation is a small but meaningful victory for real science.
