Scottsdale Unified OKs plan to cover costs while Maricopa County recovers homeowners refunds

The Scottsdale Unified School District Board of Supervisors approved a plan to balance the budget despite Maricopa County taking back nearly $24 million from the district.

A recent class action ruling means certain homeowners in Maricopa County may be owed refunds from special taxing districts throughout the county.

The Maricopa County Treasurer’s Office estimates that tax districts like Scottsdale Unified have about $330 million in total debt.

The SUSD Board of Trustees approved a plan that would allow the district to use $10 million in tax estimate letters until the funds are recovered.

“The reality is that this is just a temporary loan, to give us the cash we need for whatever the term is,” said SUSD Chief Financial Officer Shannon Crozier.

She said the district will likely finish paying the county by December.

“So the district is going to have to look at that and manage cash in a way that understands what kind of situation we are in and how long TANS will be needed,” she said. Ta.

Clothier said the district may adjust tax rates to recoup the $24 million it had budgeted.
