See how Chris Cuomo’s tricky question for Tom Homan about ‘Alligator Alcatraz’ fails.

Homan Highlights Immigration Costs on Cuomo’s Show

Tom Homan, who is known for his strong stance on border issues, pointed out the expenses that taxpayers are shouldering under the Biden administration during a segment on News Nation with Chris Cuomo. This was sparked by Cuomo’s inquiries into the financial implications of Florida’s “Crocodile Alcatraz” facility, which is set to accommodate illegal immigrants.

During a recent visit to this newly planned facility in southern Florida, officials, including President Donald Trump, discussed its capacity of 5,000 beds, estimated to cost around $450 million. Cuomo pressed Homan for insights on the criticism surrounding these costs, asking him to consider how the current administration has dealt with illegal immigration.

“Let’s look back at the previous administration. They were putting illegal immigrants in hotel rooms in New York City for $500 a night. That’s a fact,” Homan responded, adding, “That $500 per person, per night didn’t just cover lodging. They also had to include expenses for meals—three a day—medical care, and legal access, which really added to the total.”

With a considerable number of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States, the Biden administration has allocated funds to support states and cities managing these challenges. In August 2024, over $380 million was approved by Biden’s Department of Homeland Security for FEMA’s Shelter and Services Program, which aims to assist communities nationwide.

In April 2024 alone, approximately $260 million was granted through this program, and in 2023, more than $780 million was allocated for both SSP and Emergency Food and Shelter Programs.

“You really need to understand the actual costs. The facility can accommodate around 300 individuals, which includes three meals daily and full medical staff on-site,” Homan explained. “One of the advantages here is the transport efficiency due to the nearby runway, allowing for easier transfers to and from other locations like Arizona and Texas.”

Similar to New York City, which reportedly spent $1.45 billion on immigration in 2023, Florida is also being utilized by the Biden administration to house illegal immigrants.

“This facility not only supports immigration hearings but also serves as a convenient departure point for those already deported. You can load planes right from there,” Homan added.

“So, this facility actually helps reduce costs for housing,” he mentioned, emphasizing the importance of its locations for transport efficiency along the East Coast.

Since Trump’s presidency began, there has been a focused effort to enhance enforcement against illegal immigration and increase deportations. According to U.S. immigration and customs enforcement data, over 20,000 arrests have been made in 2025 alone.
