A Maricopa County detainee was arrested Wednesday after authorities said they tried to smuggle about 100 meth and fentanyl pills into the county’s lockup.
Sheriff Paul Penzone said he believed officer Andrés Salazar was arrested on the first attempt, but admitted there was a drug problem at the county jail. I overdosed. 17 of them died.
“The majority of this organization’s employees represent the highest standards of law enforcement, and we have good people doing a very difficult job,” Penzone said. “And the idea that one person acts like this and defiles another person is inexcusable. But I’m not so naive as to think that it will be the first and the last.”
Penzone said his office will be installing body scanning equipment to prevent anyone, including employees, from bringing drugs and other contraband into the prison. At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, sheriffs said prison staff would be frustrated by having their bodies scanned, but their safety and that of inmates was paramount.
Salazar joined the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in 2019.
