On Tuesday, Shomali Figures, the Democratic candidate in Alabama's newly created 2nd Congressional District, announced official endorsements from Planned Parenthood, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC and the New Democrat Coalition Action Fund.
According to a campaign announcement, the Congressional Black Caucus Political Action Committee works to increase the number of Black members in the U.S. Congress, as well as support non-Black candidates who advocate for the needs and interests of the Black community.
“In Alabama's 200-year history, we have never had two Black Congressmen at the same time, leaving the priorities of millions of Black voters unrepresented in Washington,” said Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), chairman of CBCPAC.
“It is crucial that we win Alabama's 2nd Congressional District this November, and by electing Shomali Figures we have an opportunity to make history and amplify a voice that has been ignored for far too long. I look forward to welcoming Shomali to Congress and using her experience working in all three branches of the federal government, including in President Obama's Administration, to advance policies that will put Alabama, our communities and our country in a better and stronger position.”

In an interview with Punchbowl News, Figures warned against complacency, despite the new seat leaning Democratic. “People need to know this is a campaign, it's not a coronation,” Figures said. He added that Gov. Kay Ivey won the district in the 2022 election cycle.
As Also noted According to Punchbowl, “Alabama's 2nd Congressional District is a big opportunity for Democrats to flip a seat previously held by Republicans. Given the Republican majority in the House, Figures said his election could be the one that gives Hakeem Jeffries the speakership.”
A graduate of the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama School of Law, Figures has served in various departments since 2008 under the Obama administration, including the Departments of Education, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development and Justice. She will face off against Republican candidate Carolyn Dobson in November.
Last month, Reuters covered the race as one of 11 House of Representatives elections to watch.
Figures' endorsement also includes support from Planned Parenthood Action Fund, which promotes three core principles on abortion: according to Their website states: “Abortion is medical care. Abortion is common. Abortion is a fundamental right.”
