Silver Belt | Gila County approves landfill contract, CDBG funds agreement

At its Dec. 6 meeting, the Gila County Board of Supervisors awarded landfill service contracts, approved state housing financing agreements, and increased funding for marketing/tourism initiatives.

The contract for supervision of the Russell Gulch and Buckhead Mesa landfills was awarded to Chandler engineer Stephen B. Smith, who received the highest score among the three respondents to the qualification request. His one-year contract is worth $239,000, with an option for his three one-year renewals at $115,000. This includes methane monitoring, groundwater monitoring, and other solid waste services.

Under a funding agreement between Gila County and the Arizona Department of Housing, the county will receive $118,158 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding. Gila County Community Services Director Marissa Suban told the board that these funds will restore at least six of her homes. The contract period is from December 1, 2022 for her to March 30, 2024 for her.

The board also amended the county’s current economic development agreement with Discover Gila County, Inc. to increase 2022 funding for marketing and tourism initiatives from $150,000 to $178,036 and enter into a new four-year contract. decided to Effective January 1, 2023, the new agreement will increase Discover Gila County’s annual funding to $180,000 and increase annual inflation by 3%.

The supervisor approved a modification to the grant agreement with the Arizona Department of Health Services to extend the implementation period through the end of September 2025. The $224,030 grant will allow Gila County Health and Emergency Management to continue providing AZ Health Zone (SNAPED) services.

The Board of Directors approved a $10,000 economic development grant to the Brion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum to support exhibition upgrades, website enhancements, video production, operations, and new signage. $2,000 to Miami Genesis for the Small Town Christmas event on December 17th. $7,500 to the Copper Corridor Economic Development Coalition to support economic development activities. $5,000 to the Pleasant Valley Historical Society to add to the Pleasant Valley Historical Museum.

We also signed a deal with Horizon Health and Wellness (giving Horizon $1,000 to provide mental health services in the Grove/Miami/San Carlos community) and board participation in this year’s Shop With a Hero program (6,000 dollar) was also approved.
