Sinema Backs Bill Boosting Gila County’s Economy and Supporting Arizona Veterans by Transferring Ownership of National Forest System Land

The ownership transfer will allow Gila County to use the land for a veterans retreat and community center.

Washington – Arizona Senator Kirsten Cinema, along with Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, supported a bill directing the U.S. Forest Service to transfer 232 acres of National Forest System land in the Tonto National Forest to Gila County . The Companion Act was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives by Republican Arizona Rep. Eli Crane.

“Relocating this land to Gila County will revitalize the economy and open the door to new veteran support services in the area. We will continue to work to ensure that they are available to the public,” said Cinema, who is a member of the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.

The Cinema Act will transfer an underutilized Forest Service ranger station near Young, known as the Pleasant Valley Management Site, and its associated 232.9 acres of Forest Service land to the county for veteran retreats, events, and decommissioning. Host a military mobile clinic.

The FS Pleasant Valley (PV) management site consists of 17 buildings, some of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and have associated square footage. PV management sites are no longer occupied by the National Forest Service. All administrative functions for the Pleasant Valley Ranger District are located in Young, Arizona, and the ranger station has moved to Payson, Arizona. If the land is transferred to Gila County, the NRHP-listed building will be removed from the registry.
