TOMBSTONE, Arizona (KGUN) — In southern Arizona, snow and ice filled the streets as temperatures dropped.
It’s not something you see often in Cochise County, except a few times a year.
Ed Mosqwa lives in St. David and says the temperature can usually reach 30 degrees at this time of year.
He said temperatures are usually even cooler in January, and it usually snows only once or twice during the winter months.
He said he likes to be extra vigilant when the roads are icy or snowy.
“I just feel the tires. They tell me what’s going on. I just back off so I know when I start to lose it,” Mosqwa said.
Faye Beckert, a driving instructor at a stop-and-go driving school, says that when the roads are icy or snowy, you should brake early and slow down.
She said she must drive 10 mph below the speed limit in icy conditions and maintain a six-second following distance from the vehicle in front.
“Don’t make any sudden movements, it can make you slip,” she advised.
She said you should drive the same tire track as the previous car and consider snow chains, especially when going up mountains.
The Arizona DOT says to raise the front hood and use the emergency flashers if the vehicle cannot be driven.
We also encourage people to keep winter clothing such as gloves and scarves in the car at all times. They also said to keep safety flares and first aid kits.
