The campaign promise comes as the presidential election draws to a close, with border security still a top issue for voters.
The number of migrants encountered along the U.S.-Mexico border during the Biden-Harris White House’s four fiscal years was about 8.5 million, according to the latest data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The number of illegal border crossings in fiscal year 2024 is the second worst in U.S. history, and will not be surpassed until fiscal year 2023.
Following the wave of illegal immigration, there have been increasing reports of criminal activity by the Torren de Aragua, an international gang with Venezuelan origins. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) suspects about 600 people in the United States have potential ties to Venezuelan gangs, but experts predict the number is probably much higher. .
The murders of Jocelyn Nangaray, Rachel Morin, and Laken Riley are the latest high-profile examples of numerous victims allegedly at the hands of illegal immigrants. Their cases not only kept border security at the forefront of public debate, but also spawned new laws and legislative proposals across the country.
Trump, a longtime advocate of immigration enforcement, has continued to make the issue a centerpiece of his campaign.
[Vice President Kamala Harris’] We have the worst border in the history of the world,” President Trump said at a press conference on Tuesday. “The world has never had borders like this.”
“It’s a level I’ve never seen before,” he continued. “If you look at Venezuela, their crime is way down, and you wouldn’t even notice if you went to Caracas…because they’re taking all the criminals – they’re all coming – they’re drug addicts. Take the dealers and send them to the United States.”
