The Pinal District 5 Republican Committee and the Superstition Mountain Republican Club of Apache Junction co-hosted the “American Bill of Rights – Then and Now” event on Saturday, March 11 at Tumbleweed Grille in Apache Junction.
The event was designed to be educational, entertaining, and to bring communities together to remember and celebrate our Bill of Rights.
Pinal County Supervisor Jeff Serdy welcomed guests to the event and congratulated the event organizers for their help in creating the event. Sheriff Mark Lamb set the tone for the event with words about patriotism. Local youth performed national anthems and patriotic songs.
In a solemn moment, D5 President Vicky McLaughlin made a donation to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office for the Youth Redirection Program in memory of Sheriff Lamb’s son and his family who died in a tragic accident. .
The program kicked off with co-hosts Vicky McLaughlin and SMRC President Alan Miller giving a brief history of the Bill of Rights. About how it shaped us, especially Arizona, during the period of western expansion (circa 1800s).
Gun law author and Bill of Rights scholar Alan Corwin guided local dignitaries through reading the first 10 Bill of Rights amendments. Each dignitary read out their assigned amendments and expressed their special interest and knowledge about the amendments.
To bring to life the then-and-current relationship of the Bill of Rights, Alan Corwin and the western reenactors of Superstition Mountain Regulator played out a scenario about amendments and how they were in the early days of Arizona and the current territory. It showed how they were perceived and understood.
A 50/50 donation and raffle was held for a variety of donation prizes including books, hats, memorabilia, and a handmade wooden American flag by SMRC Vice President Ted Gremmel. Proceeds from the event will be used for local youth education programs.
