Tax hearings on July 16 for Gila County

Gila County Truth in Taxation Hearing

Gila County is hosting its annual “Truth in Taxation” event, inviting residents to participate either in person at locations like Globe or Payson, or virtually via the Gila County YouTube channel. The hearing is set for Tuesday, July 16th at 10 am.

The meeting will take place at 707 S. Colcord Rd, Payson. It’s worth noting that Tommie Cline will be streamed live to the Martin Gila County Complex’s supervisor meeting room.

As Steve Christensen, chairman of the Gila County Board of Supervisors, mentioned, “As a Gila County resident and taxpayer, I recognize that taxes are high and burdensome. I’ve personally pledged not to increase the property tax rate, which has remained unchanged for over 13 years. I feel it’s essential to operate within the revenue I receive to manage the county.”

Mary Belling, Gila County Treasury Director, clarified that while the primary tax rate has stayed steady at 4.19% since 2010, “this rate can yield different total tax amounts each year owing to new construction and property value adjustments.”

The Truth of the Tax Hearing Notice indicates a proposed major property tax collection (excluding new construction) of $924,530.07, equating to 3.456%. New construction in Gila County is valued at $6,645,416, according to the 2024 Levy Limit Worksheet released on February 10th.

First Hearing: Gila County Library District

The Gila County Library District has informed property taxpayers about its plan to increase secondary property taxes compared to last year, following the Arizona Section 48-254 amendment.

They’re proposing an increase of $53,507.75, which is about 3.456%. For context, this increase would translate to a secondary property tax of $24.25 on a $100,000 home. Without the increase, the home would yield a total tax of $23.20.

This proposed increase does not take into account additional secondary property taxes from new construction and excludes changes related to previously approved voter obligations.

The first of two hearings focused on tax changes is scheduled to take place in the Supervisor’s Office Hearing Room at 10 am on Tuesday, July 16th at the Gila County Courthouse. It will also be streamed live from the Tommy Klein Martin Complex in Gila County.

Second Hearing: Primary Property Tax

In line with Arizona Section 42-17107, the Gila County has notified property taxpayers of its intent to increase major property taxes compared to last year.

The proposal entails a primary property tax increase of $924,530.07, approximately 3.465%. For instance, this increase would mean a primary property tax of $419 on a $100,000 home, whereas without the raise, the total tax would be $400.90.

This proposed increase does not factor in the major property tax amount generated from new construction. Furthermore, it also does not consider potential changes due to voter-approved debts or budget overrides.
