YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – Several teachers across Yuma County were recognized for their great work in education.
One of the teachers at R. Pete Woodard Middle School, Micaela Hernandez, was named the Middle/Secondary School Teacher of the Year.
“Winning the Middle School Teacher of the Year award brought out all sorts of emotions. I felt joy, pride and gratitude. It was a true recognition of my hard work and passion in the field of education,” Hernandez said.
Hernandez has been in education for four years and serves as a social studies and student council teacher.
The Teacher of the Year program is a chance to spotlight her and other current and former teachers who make extraordinary contributions to their students.
The main award was Teacher of the Year, won by Crystal Truluck, but numerous awards were also presented in recognition of other educators.
“We know our purpose, we know why we got into this profession, but being recognized gives us that extra energy and drive to keep going,” said Marsha Gomez, winner of the Intermediate/Specialty category.
For Teacher of the Year Crystal Truluck, being recognized at an event like Thursday night feels very special.
“Someone once said that teachers don't get into this job for the accolades, so just having an event like this hat is a real great feeling, recognizing all our hard work and dedication,” Truluck said.
Other notable winners included Jessica Cantu in the elementary school division and Hilary Brown in the high school division.
