CNN’s Van Jones praised President Donald Trump on Monday for appointing Alice Marie Johnson as his “pardon emperor.”

“He placed Miss Alice Johnson, a previously imprisoned black woman who was released while working with Kim Kardashian – he was responsible for pardoning her, which is huge. ” Jones said. “People who are actually incarcerated in the federal system understand how the Department of Justice screws people to return home, by the office of pardon.”
“She’s going to fix it. As someone who’s been working on criminal justice… someone who was previously incarcerated for 30 years has experienced all these pardons and people get a fair shot. Check it out. I think it’s a very good thing,” he continued.
Johnson had sentenced life in prison in the 1990s for his role in the multi-million-dollar cocaine trafficking ring. Trump sentenced her to June 2018 at the request of Kardashian, who came to the White House to promote criminal justice reform.
Jones worked with the White House during Trump’s first term in 2018 to allow non-violent offenders to leave prison early due to an increase in “time credits earned.”
“We have to give Trump credit where credit is due,” Jones said in 2019.
Radio host Charlamagne told the New York Times in May 2024 that Trump’s bipartisan law signing could turn black voters’ support into him in the November election.
“There are people who have actually seen their families and the people they love actually come out of prison,” Shahlamagun said.
