Construction on Phase 1 of the Schultz Creek Basin Restoration Project will soon begin. This phase is a partnership between the Coconino County Flood Control District and the Coconino National Forest. Construction will begin on May 22nd and will continue until June. The district has contracted Natural Channel Designs to build a structure called a “plug and spread” feature designed to reduce levels of river sedimentation and erosion. By delaying and diffusing flood waters, these features serve a similar function to the alluvial fan restoration successfully implemented in other watershed restoration projects within the museum and in the Schultz Fire Scar. This structure will allow the City of Flagstaff’s new detention facility to function more effectively. During construction, Schultz Pass Road across the forest line will be closed to motorized vehicles, but hiking, biking, and horseback riding will remain available. Approximately half a mile of Chimney Trail north of ‘Schultz Y’ will also be closed to all users. Phase 2 will start in late 2023.
