Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah on Monday detailed to Tucker Carlson the shocking story that led him to believe President Joe Biden is in “cognitive decline.”
Senator Lee appeared on “The Tucker Carlson Show” to discuss his concerns about Biden's mental health and how Democrats and the legacy media are downplaying the situation. The Republican senator recounted a story of his wife attending a White House dinner and noticing that Biden seemed “confused” on the phone, having forgotten who she was. (Related: Democrats previously rushed to defend Biden's mental health. But what happened after his disastrous debate defeat?)
Carlson began by talking about the pressure Biden was feeling from those around him to give up on reelection, but then began asking if Biden was aware that he was “disabled.”
“What did you think as a senator? [a] “Biden has been a prominent senator who has had to negotiate with the White House over the last three and a half years. Of course, our process requires that you negotiate with the White House. Are you aware that Biden has been intoxicated?” asked Carlson, co-founder of the Daily Caller News Foundation and The Daily Caller.
“Yes, I could tell just from a distance,” Lee said, recounting how she lost her mother-in-law to Alzheimer's disease several years ago.
Lee told Carlson that doctors had warned her that her decline was “beginning to affect her posture, especially the way she walked,” which could be a sign “things are progressing quickly.”
“I saw that same gait and posture during President Biden's first term in office — I can't remember exactly when it was in 2021, but it was sometime in his first year in office,” Lee said. “Of course, there are other reasons why something like that would happen. It doesn't necessarily reflect cognitive decline, but there was a lot of reason to believe that cognitive decline was occurring.”
“They protected him not only from the public and an unfriendly press, but from members of Congress. Now, remember, I served as a senator for 13 and a half years. I served through three presidents. You know President Obama. [with] “Biden was vice president, then you know Trump, and now Biden is president. We've seen a lot more of the other presidents,” Lee continued.

The Republican senator detailed how former presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump had “very positive” interactions with members of Congress, but stressed that there was “very little” during Biden's term, pointing to the president's interactions with Lee's wife, Sharon Lee.
“That almost never happens with Biden. It's almost like they're shielding him from us. In a way, my wife, I think it was the first half or first quarter of 2022, went to an event for senators' spouses at the White House hosted by a first lady who's a longtime member of the senators' spouses organization, and while they were there, President Biden strolled in. I think they were in one of the ballrooms,” Lee said.
“She said the president was not accompanied by any Secret Service or staff and he just walked in. She just instinctively replied, 'Oh, hi, Mr. President, it's an honor to meet you,'” Lee continued. “The president asked her, 'Do you work in the East Wing?' And she replied, 'No, no, Mr. President, I'm Sharon. Sharon Lee, wife of Sen. Mike Lee.'”
Lee said Biden had twice sworn in senators before leaving his position as vice president in the Obama administration, and that at the time his wife believed the exchange “would resolve the issue.” Despite that history, Lee said his wife told him Biden “seemed confused” and asked again if he worked in the White House.
“Right after that, someone approached one of the other senators' spouses, I think it was a Democrat, and she picked up her cell phone and said, 'Hey, my brother-in-law's a big fan. It's his birthday, would you like to say hi?' This is typical Biden behavior,” Lee said.
“But this woman handed him the phone. The phone rang. Her brother-in-law answered, 'Hello,' and he had a confused look on his face, held the phone out, hung up, and handed the phone back,” Lee continued. “This is a very big deal for Joe Biden.”
“And this is [the] “The sitting president of the United States,” Carlson noted, and Lee agreed, saying he believes the exchange took place “a little over two years ago.”
Lee then said, “You're starting to see little pieces,” to which Carlson interjected, “And those are big pieces!”
“We then saw the footage on TV, which was in some ways even worse. I'm still amazed at how the media went to great lengths to downplay the importance of this incident, and yet they were caught on camera. They were there and didn't comment on it, as if we hadn't said anything, as if it wasn't real,” Lee concluded.
Democrats and political commentators have voiced concerns about Biden's mental health after he was seen struggling to finish sentences during a debate with Trump. Despite various gaffes and concerns about the president's mental health, the White House pushed back against the idea, with spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre describing the video circulating online as a “cheap fake” orchestrated by Republicans.
But Republicans and voters alike had been expressing concerns about the president long before this year.
An August 2022 Issues & Insights/TIPP poll of 1,335 adults nationwide found that 59% of adults said they were “very concerned” about Biden's mental health, while 36% said they were “somewhat concerned.” according to According to the data, after the debate, CBS/YouGov vote It shows that 72% of Americans no longer believe Biden is cognitively and mentally incapable of holding public office.
