CNN political commentator S.E. Kapp said Thursday that President Joe Biden's reelection campaign is in disarray and suggested Biden could use his COVID-19 infection as an opportunity to withdraw from the race.
Biden tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday and is “experiencing mild symptoms.” CNN News Central host Sara Sydnor asked Cupp whether Biden should step aside now because his illness could be a more dignified reason to step aside. Cupp responded that he should, given the tough circumstances of the campaign. (RELATED: Biden's 'health' remarks spark frenzy of speculation)

“He doesn't need an excuse. He has a lot of reasons to step aside. The House and Senate races are one of them, of course. I mean, this is an opportunity. I'm going to take advantage of this opportunity,” Kopp said. “This has been a bad week for Joe Biden. It's one of the few bad weeks now. I'm going to take this opportunity to say, 'Listen, I'm going to do the right thing for the country. I'm going to do the right thing for the party. I'm going to step aside and let's support Kamala or whoever it is, let's do it.'”
Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California called on Biden to resign on Wednesday, before he was diagnosed with COVID-19. MSNBC senior political analyst Eugene Daniels said Schiff's appeal was likely “supported” by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who he said is “very close.”
MSNBC national political correspondent Steve Kornacki said Wednesday that Democrats face significant obstacles in retaining control of the Senate, with former President Donald Trump leading Biden in the polls.
“Democrats are desperate to get Joe Biden to understand, and he doesn't, so they're leaking these private conversations, trying to triangulate Joe Biden and make him realize what's going on in the campaign,” Kopp began the show. “Unfortunately, Biden's resistance seems to come not from strength, but from delusion. And the fact that everybody's talking openly about these private efforts speaks to that delusion and that feeling that they don't want Biden to understand. Biden doesn't believe in polls. He professes that he doesn't believe in polls.”
“He's not listening to his constituents. A majority of his constituents are telling him, 'I don't think you'll get there.' He's not acknowledging three components of Trump's momentum,” she added. “Momentum after the debates. Momentum after the attempted shooting. Momentum after the Republican National Convention. All of this is bad, and I don't think Democrats believe he can get there unless they do this.”
