Thousands of ballots still pending tabulation, Yuma County recorder provides update

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – KYMA spoke one-on-one with Yuma County Recorder Richard Colwell, who said they are still counting all ballots countywide.

Colwell said the reason for the long wait times is because every ballot must be processed individually and every signature must be verified.

“Every ballot we receive, whether it’s 5,000, 10,000 or 30,000 ballots, has to be physically handled multiple times by staff,” Colwell said.

After verification, Colwell said the ballots were carefully examined to ensure they were valid and in good condition to be counted.

“Our staff works pretty hard. They’re out there.” [on Sunday]. they will be there [on Monday]. They’re there until they’re done… Another factor that made this take longer is that the ballot is two pages long. And even if you are a single voter, there are two pages you have to look at to make sure they are correct,” Colwell added.

Finally, election staff are responsible for the tabulation, and the results are delivered directly to the Secretary of State and local governments.

According to Yuma County Elections Websitemore than 25,000 total ballots skew the tally. According to Yuma County data, a total of 41,000 votes were cast in this election.
