The top official of the Biden administration’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has directed immigration assistance grants to a nonprofit that previously held senior positions, the Watchdog Report revealed Thursday.
Robin Dan Marcos, who headed HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) under former President Joe Biden, has overseen the distribution of $22.6 billion in grants since 2020, with former employers having the highest profits He emerged as a person. HHS officials kept it in the outlet that Dan Marcos rejected himself from a decision involving his previous employer, but Openthebooks said he saw a dramatic increase in IRC funding during his tenure, and in 2021 It reported that it would exceed $22 million from $235 million in 2023. Through a network of nonprofit organizations, ORR provided extensive benefits to immigrants, including savings plans that fit dollar dollars in vehicle and home purchases, small business loans up to $15,000, and credit loans up to $1,500. An Openthebooks report calls the program “a giant magnet for those seeking to claim asylum across borders.”
During Dunn Marcos’ tenure, ORRs have generally increased funding dramatically, with annual grant spending rising from $2.6 billion in 2020 to a peak of $10 billion in 2023. The surge in spending coincided with a record-breaking southern border intersection as customs and border security reported anxiety of 2.4 million people over the same period.
The biggest portion of the funding – $12.4 billion was directed towards programs for unaccompanied minor children. Openthebooks filed a Freedom of Information Act request in 2023 for emails exchanged between Dunn Marcos and the IRC and has not yet received a response. Dan Marcos left her post at ORR after Trump took office in January.
The report comes after the Trump administration exceeded the $80 million it used to house immigrants at luxury hotels in New York City on Wednesday.
