The State Department announced Friday that it had imposed visa restrictions on Thai officials involved in the forced return of Uyghurs to China.
In a press release from the state DepartmentSecretary of State Marco Rubio has placed visa restrictions on current and former Thai officials.
“In light of China’s longstanding genocide acts and the crimes against humanity committed against Uighurs, we are calling on governments around the world not to force Uighurs and other groups back to China,” Rubio said in a press release. The move comes after the Thai government forced 40 Uyghurs into China on February 27th. According to To the State Department. Initially, the State Department urged the Chinese government to “examine the happiness” of Uyghur people.
“The law goes against the long-standing tradition of protecting Thai people towards the most vulnerable and contradicts Thailand’s commitment to protecting human rights,” Rubio said on February 27 in a State Department press release. “We urge all governments in the country that seek protection so that Uyghur people do not forcefully return their ethnic groups to China.”
Members of Uyghur, an indigenous minority in New Jiang Province, China, are targeted for genocide and crime against humanity committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
The CCP has used detention camps to detain Uyghurs in New Jiang, and it is estimated that such facilities can accommodate as many as 10,000 people.
Multiple reports and testimony from China show that the Communist government is targeting the majority of Muslim Uyghur taking measures such as banning public prayers and monitoring mosques. Other reports allege that the Chinese government is killing Uyghur and forcing women to abort.
Between 2015 and 2018, the birth rate in the majority of Wyful regions of Hotan and Kashgar fell by more than 60%, while at Shinjiang, the birth rate fell by almost 24% in 2019. According to To the Associated Press in 2020.
